Sophie Moleta was born in Wellington New Zealand but grew up in
Western Australia with numbers of European trips introducing her to European living and culture. Her father is a specialist in medieval and Renaissance Italy and her mother was an accomplished music teacher and accompanist to classical singers. Family, religion and classical music were main influences in early life - Sophie from age four learning piano from her mother - performing regularly as part of family at various functions.
When older, Sophie sang and played percussion in a punk group, The Brautigans, in Perth. Then travel, within Australia and a year living in India, with further trips to and from Europe, and living in New Zealand on several occasions continued her movements and personal studies.
In 1998 Sophie produced her first full album "Trust". It was now time for music full time - moving to France in 1999 to perform and to record an album "Dive" which sold ten thousand copies - earning her a cult following mainly in France. A publishing contract with BMG/France helped fund the album which was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in England.
At the same time, Sophie was living in Brighton and on the Isle of Jersey recording with the trance group Human Movement. They had one dance hit - "Love Has Come Again" - on the Renaissance (UK) label. This track has appeared on more than 30 compilations of dance anthems of that time.
Difficulties with her French record label (Telescopic) led to inability to release her work commercially for four years and entailed her leaving France and England for homeland Perth. Several self-releases of personal albums followed - as well as collaborations on an MGM album ("Wildlife Researcher") in 2004 with Italian Diego Bosco.
Sophie also had four tracks in laid-back jazz style with Swedish guitarist David Harenstam on the Swedish album "What Happened in Fremantle" - released in 2004.
Then an album with American Holmes Ives, in the electronic ambient genre - documenting a long distance romance between Sophie and Holmes. This album "Untie Me" was released in 2005 and receives internet radio airplay daily still.
In the meanwhile Sophie had returned to Wellington in 2003 - teaching music and piano to young children. This period resulted in a single and video in 2006 - "Te-Atawhai", and then in 2007 the album "Every Girl I Know Deserves a Packet of Stars" was released with fourteen of her New Zealand compositions.
Currently Sophie is studying in Western Australia - with music not far away at any time.
