Bio: By Julia herself.
I was born in Wisconsin, raised on Long Island, and now live in Brooklyn. I started
performing around 7 or so in the backseat of my family's car. Carpenters songs - while
my brothers would pinch me and my mom would shush them. I consider those my first
performances.
Then when I was 12 I found an old nylon-string classical guitar in someone's
attic (I still have it, it sounds great). My sister showed me how to play D and C, and I put
some words to it and voila…. I took some guitar lessons, and learned a lot from guitar books.
I played behind my high school for anyone who asked, and carried my guitar with me
everywhere.
In college I performed solo gigs at local coffeehouses and student lounges,
and wrote and wrote and wrote. A few times I even got paid!
After college I fronted and
wrote for a band, the first incarnation of Molly's Last Word (a play on the last paragraph
of Ulysses, by James Joyce - her last word was "yes" - ah, Molly…). We played around
New York for a while and went our separate ways. The next Molly's Last Word,
consisting of Jon Ossman on bass/Chapman stick, Tom Curiano on drums, me,
and Marina Belica, was started in 1995 and suffered a friendly parting of ways last year.
The current band is made up of me on vocals/acoustic guitar, Marina singing backing vocals,
Ethan Eubanks on drums, and Whynot Jansveld on bass, with special appearances
by Chris Cunningham on guitar. We do lots of gigs in the New York area and for
anyone who will ask us!
I'm now writing songs for my next album.
