Jessica Weiser
"Can't forget who I was or where I've been
Shed the skin of a hundred year war
Packed the bruises of combat
And left the shells on the floor
And I won't go back
I won't go back"
-"Transition"
On her second album TRANSITION, New York singer/songwriter Jessica
Weiser conveys hope through lyrics layered with meaning and imagery,
a voice that is both powerful and soothing, and songs always drawing
from the emotion within.
"TRANSITION is an album about growing up and moving on," Jessica says
"it is me painting lyrical pictures of some of what I've gone through and
an attempt at universalizing my own experiences and trying to find
meaning in them and let others find meaning in them. It is about
overcoming certain things in life and moving on."
Weiser's journey to find herself through music began early, and at just
9 years old, after inheriting her beloved grandmother's baby grand
piano and taking a few lessons, she would sit down and write musical
compositions on the spot, sometimes playing improv for an hour or more.
Although she began singing and performing at a young age, Weiser didn't
begin serious vocal training until her junior year of high school, and
at 20 she bought a guitar impulsively and taught herself to play by learning
other artists' songs and began writing lyrics shortly after as a
means of healing and a form of expression.
In 1998 Weiser headed to Vancouver, BC where she recorded her first
songs with friend Adam Drake, and released WHAT HAS HAPPENED, a 5-song
EP, in September. The quiet, intense songs on WHAT HAS HAPPENED explore
loss, confusion, and emptiness. The album has sold more than 500 copies,
and received praise from music industry professionals, musicians, and fansacross
the country.
Almost a year later Weiser's growth both vocally and lyrically are showcased
on her new release TRANSITION. Incorporating the help of Jeff White, graduate
of the University of North Carolina (Asheville) in music production and
recording, TRANSITION was recorded entirely in Weiser's studio apartment.
An album featuring raw, stripped-down version of some of Weiser's new
songs, TRANSITION offers moving piano ballads as well as acoustic pop songs
on guitar.
With strength and hope, the songs on TRANSITION are powerful and positive,
like the title track, a song about discovering who we are, being content
with that person, and deciding not to change for anyone. Her desire to
communicate better and more clearly is examined in "Speechless," a song
about the power/powerlessness of language, and "Survivor" explores
early sexual violence, and is just one of the songs that Weiser's message
is ultimately one of hope: "14 awkward and broken/Normalcy out of my range/I
will survive the days okay/But still feel I'm the one to blame. . . Inside
I am healing/And I will get my life back."
"I'm a much different person now that when my first album was released,"
she says, "I'm more positive now, and interested in universalizing my experiences
and helping other people connect to what I'm saying and healing with my
words and music. I want to be an inspirational person and I want to use
the things I've gone through in a positive way. Music for me has become
the way that I understand and articulate things, and if other people can
take my words and music and use them in some way, then I'll feel like I've
accomplished what I set out to do."
Weiser's immediate goals are to record a fully-produced album, full
of strings, drum loops, bass, guitars, and more, and plans to include new
songs like: Scarred, The Deconstruction of David's Wall, Esther, What Never
Was, The Drive, Transition, Starstruck, and several others. Still maturing
and exploring through music, Weiser's new songs look beyond her own experiences
and examine issues like fame, prejudices, relationships, and beauty
and the processes some women go through to be perfect.
Over the past year she has shared the stage with independent artists
like Jenny Bruce (New York), Tricia Concepcion (Detroit), Canadian's Rayanne,
Rebecca Timmons, Cicero, and Michelle Turingan, and has opened for Dead
Daisy Recording artist Emm Gryner, and Nettwerk/Capitol recording artist
Tara MacLean.
