Jenny Kerr
Jenny Kerr took musical example early in life from her grandmother, Louise
Lincoln Kerr, a classical viola player with the Cleveland symphony and
composer of note.
Although classically trained, Jenny's musical interests
drifted toward indigenous American forms, such as delta blues, old-time
mountain music, and country blues.
At a very young age, she began to teach
herself the rudiments of clawhammer banjo, delta fingerstyle guitar,
resonator slide and the harmonica (an unusual instrument for a young girl
then as it is now). She had an early start in her career when at 13 a
topical song she had written was chosen for the lead-in to KPFA news.
She lived, studied and performed in Paris for 8 years, left a post-doc
degree at Oxford to return to her native San Francisco develop her own
musical vision. She established her label JennyCo Records in 2000.
