Christine grew up in a family of nine children and is self-taught on guitar, having learned how to play
by watching lessons broadcast on public television when she was 12 years old.
In 1984, she quit her day job at Bellevue Hospital to pursue a career in music full-time. She is a
founding member of the Four Bitchin' Babes which she performed with during the '90s.
Christine has also created, directed, produced, and taught performance courses at the "Martha's
Vineyard Singer /Songwriters' Retreat".
She has won many awards such as NAIRD award, two New York Music Awards, four ASCAP
composer awards, the Kate Wolf Memorial Award and the 2001 Backstage Bistro Award.
Her song "Sensitive New Age Guys" is in the long-running Off-Broadway production of "A. . . My Name
Will Always Be Alice," and her science-based song "If We Had No Moon" will be included in an album of
all space-related music to be released by the National Space Society later in 2001.
She also tells stories, twirls glowing batons on-stage, and has most recently incorporated a
digital phrase sampler into her live concert, enabling her to create improvised lyrics (and intricate
vocal harmonies) on the fly.

Christine Lavin has been a major force in the contemporary folk world for two decades, as a
solo artist (releasing such notable albums as Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind and Attainable Love),
a founding member of the Four Bitchin' Babes, and as instigator of such songwriter compilations as
On a Winter's Night and When October Goes. The Bellevue Years is essential Lavin, alternately funny
and poignant, available here on CD for the first time.

I remember hearing Christine Lavin for the first time when she had a song out called "Prince
Charles" about how Diana stole him from her. At the time my friends and I thought it was quite funny.
It's a little sad now. Christine is still performing frequently so if you have seen her live and would like
to write up a little review, I'd be glad to post it on this site! Just email me.
