Picture This (2003)

I've been doing this for 5 years now officially… Unofficially… I've been doing this in my head since I was five.
Every time I think I'm nuts or that I've chosen possibly the most unsteady profession possible, I'm reminded by
friends and by history that it keeps choosing me and no matter how hard i try I'd never be able to shake this
love/addiction/need for music. Yesterday I thought seriously about becoming a chef ... or a teacher… or someone
who organizes those huge benefits for important charities. I thought about losing myself in India and becoming a
vagabond...traveling 'round the world sans guitar on my back. The friends I confided in laughed at me…and I know
too well that I'm happiest when making music…that I feel completely fulfilled after finishing a song...that I feel totally
alive standing on any stage ...singing songs to people who are truly listening and truly understand what it is that
I'm trying to say...
ok… so that was a tangent…
I've been doing this for 5 years...is that where I began? 5 years and 4 CDs and a video and tours through Canada,
the States and more recently Australia. And 5 years later... here I am. I started out on piano, took lessons from
age 6, practiced like a maniac and made top grades in the Royal Conservatory examinations. But by my teens
I was becoming distracted by pop music and starting to write clearer songs and not just the usual old ramblings
of sounds. By 19 I was taking music in the fine arts dept at York U where I met some incredible artists and people
and starting taking piano & vocal improv. By 22 I was recording my first album of songs. That was such an
incredible time and so exciting for me. The songs were mostly piano but some guitar songs made it in as well.
I'd only been playing guitar for a year and was nervous about my playing. The rest pretty much falls into
order... more CDs...more traveling... more music. Coming back from Australia I took a long pause, which
I'm just coming out of now. Sometimes music takes up so much of me that there's no room for anything
else...and I need all those other things in life to feel right about the music.
