Dear Friends,
We the undersigned singers/songwriters/strummers and dreamers believe that
the upcoming presidential election will have an impact on our country and
the world community for many decades to come. We believe that in order to
reach the positive goals of peace and unity, George Bush must go. To this
end, we support JOHN KERRY FOR PRESIDENT. We urge you to join us and do the
following in order to ensure that Kerry wins back the White House in 2004:
1. Vote for John Kerry
2. Contact your local Democratic party and offer transportation assistance
getting Democrats to the polls.
3. If you are voting in a swing state, vote for John Kerry. Ralph Nader
is not an option in a race this close. Winner takes all in American
elections.
This means that if Ralph Nader gets 3% of the vote, he doesn't get 3% of
the voice. The president gets 100% of the voice (and cabinet selections).
If you are planning to vote for Ralph Nader, you can sign up at
VotePair.org, where people in non-swing states agree to vote for Nader in
exchange for Kerry votes in swing states. It's legal, and VotePair's founder
(and Dar Williams' friend), Jamie Raskin, says that Ralph Nader has endorsed
it this time around.
4. Don't give up on trying to bring one more vote to the Democratic Party.
Talk it up!
Thank you for being part of our community. We look forward to working with
you for a better tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Patty Larkin and Dar Williams

I’ve just discovered this really cool website that has a similar mission to us here at Collected Sounds…it attempts to get the word out about Independent Female Musicians. I just found it quite by accident the other day. It’s beautiful and informative and all that. You’ve got to check it out. It’s called Ventana.
I emailed the web master to find out if he wanted to exchange links and he informed me that he might have to close the doors on the site due to financial problems.
Therefore, I am asking you to head on over to the site, and if you like it and want to keep it online, make a donation. However small. I believe that every little bit helps.
Here’s the link:

Just wanted to let you all know about an artist I recently heard. Her name is Toby Lightman. She was featured in the recent Women Who Rock magazine and has a CD coming out in March and I think it's going to be a big hit.
Her PR people sent me a CD sampler as a little preview for the upcoming CD; "Little Things" and she's really good. Her style is somewhere in the neighborhood of bluesy, soulful-rock with a little bit of a dance beat. Her influences range from Lauryn Hill to Sheryl Crowe citing Stevie Wonder as her all time favorite.
It's hard to make a helpful comparison because the only other artist I've heard that is similar is Rosey (though if you don't know Lightman, you probably don't know Rosey either). Just trust me, she's fantastic.
Check out this unique and talented artist using the following links:

Ok the saga continues. Women Who Rock magazine is not officially dead. They are trying to sell it to antoher publishing company and they have some interested potential buyers.
I got this from the Women Who Rock message boards: "The publishing company, Cherry Lane, has undergone finanical restructuring. As a result, the magazine division was dropped. That is, the title of GUITAR ONE magazine was sold to another company. But G1 business will continue as usual, just under another publisher.
As for WOMEN WHO ROCK, the title is currently up for sale. There are several potential and interested buyers. Cherry Lane is currently in negotiations with these other publishing companies. We are extremely hopeful, optimistic, and should know more in the next couple of weeks.
No one that has purchased a subscription or placed orders will lose any money. In fact, the Jan/Feb issue is being printed as I type. For the consumer of WWR, take note: we are hopeful things will continue as ususal, and we will be putting out an even better magazine!
And that's the whole truth, straight from the Cherry Lane offices!"
November 16, 2003
There was some speculation and confusion about this, but I have gotten what I think is the word on Women Who Rock Magazine.
It has folded. Word has it that the whole magazine department of Cherry Lane Publishing is folding. It seems they've sold Guitar One to another company but we don't know the future of the rest of them.
What I think sucks is that they are still selling subscriptions on their website, but of course, I didn't try to buy any, and maybe if someone tried it wouldn't let them. I hope that's the case.
You can read the whole thread here on the Collected Sounds message board. It's in the General Music Discussion Area. HERE
I think our only hope is for another publishing company to buy "Women Who Rock" so we can continue to read this great publication.
In the meantime, check out

New CDs to get!
Sarah McLachlan's CD, "Afterglow" is now on PRE-Sale at Amazon!
"Amaze Me" by Various Artists. This one you can get right now. This is a collection of songs by musicians who love their country and believe the US can be a leader for peace in the world. In a time when it's said to be unpatriotic to use the very freedoms we are trying to protect, these women are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. The songs cover a lot of ground, from kindness and lullabies to guided missiles and the Patriot Act. Some issue a direct challenge for a better America while others invite the listener to imagine peaceful alternatives to our current course of action. Most are recent creations, although a few date back 10-15 years with messages that are still relevant today.

I've redesigned the site a little. I just got so tired of the way it "stacked" meaning that the viewer has to scroll down and down and down to see everything. That was very unprofessional. I wanted most of the info right there when you first look at it.
I also updated the slide show so that it’s mostly indie musicians since that’s the way this site is going (it was hard to take off Sarah McLachlan, but I did it, dammit).
I also want to have the search engine on every page, though I don't know if Atomz will allow that. We'll see. Any way, that's the news. That and that I had the
Jaia Suri House Concert last night. It went very well. She's a great performer and and equally great person. Stay tuned, I will put up photos and a little synopsis of the show.

After 29 years on the air, Amazon Country is still a vital, interesting radio hour which is important to many different communities: Philadelphia's Lesbian and Gay community; fans of independent music and new artists; Feminists and others interested in local and national women's events; owners of small venues and independent producers searching for acts to book or needing publicity for their artists; and everyone who knows the value of truly diverse programming.
But the station wants to shut it down. Sign the Petition to restore

This Monday (June 1, 2003), FCC Chair Michael Powell will hold his vote on media
consolidation. The vote will conclude a process which has shown
deliberate disregard for the views and opinions of the American
people. Powell has refused to even release the actual language of
the rule change -- it won't be known until after the vote. And he's
only held a single meeting to hear the views of the public. Even when
a bipartisan group of Senators requested that he give Congress some
time to discuss the impact of this change, Powell brushed them off.
Chairman Powell still has the power to delay the rule change and allow
time to have a democratic debate about its consequences. Please call
him today and ask him to allow a real public debate on an issue of
such massive importance.

ALIVE AND WELL: THE PROTEST SONG ENDURES ON THE INTERNET
With commercial airwaves largely controlled, musicians find refuge on-line
MARCH 2003, NEW YORK - Contrary to recent reports, the protest song is not dead; rather artists are now sidestepping corporate censorship via the Internet, and in doing so reaching out to a truly global audience. The absence of protest music from commercial airwaves is due to stations bowing to their conglomerate heads, anxious to keep listeners and advertisers unified. And while mainstream artists like Sheryl Crow have made well-meaning yet subtle statements, most are wary of taking a more vocal stance, mindful of the kind of Clear Channel-fueled boycotts that The Dixie Chicks garnered. Already a haven for independent artists boxed out from over-air radio playlists, the Internet has now become the main forum for music as well as musicians with a message.
One example is that of Canadian duo Chris Brown and Kate Fenner. They first performed their original song "Resist War" at The Living Room in New York City on January 5, 2003. The poetically urgent ballad was well received that night by their dedicated audience and friends in attendance, including Internet radio entrepreneur Pete Harris. After the show, Harris encouraged them to record the track and make it available on-line. Within 48 hours, the domain www.resistwar.com was snatched, a whirlwind recording session completed and the song uploaded. Three months later, www.resistwar.com has received some 8,000 hits with upwards of 200 daily visits. Moreover, the site has evolved into a movement in itself, featuring links to other protest songs, anti-war information sources and peace campaigns.
Chris & Kate are veterans of socially aware music; they released the Gascd in 2001, an album dedicated to social justice and the legal defense of protestors featuring artists such as Ani DiFranco and Barenaked Ladies. As well as tracks from the Gascd and "Resist War" other protest music playing on www.harrisradio.com includes songs from artists such as Alice Peacock, Bruce Cockburn and Sara Marlowe.
For more information on Chris & Kate, Resist War or Harris Radio visit www.resistwar.com, www.harrisradio.com or call Carrie Crespo on 917-251-5557.

Take an album's worth of traditional Irish songs and spice them up,
as a way to both shed a different light on music often regarded as
being pretty "uncool" and to celebrate Ireland's rich songwriting past.
It's a vision Sinead O'Connor has fostered for more than 12 years, one
that numerous major label execs and business associates have panned
during that time, and one that she nevertheless realizes with the
forthcoming "Sean-Nos Nua" (Old Style New), released today via
Vanguard.

I have a couple of important-ish things.
First of all, I survived putting together my second Collected Sounds House Concert. It was great fun and really not a lot of trouble. I just tend to freak out when it isn't neccessary.
It took place on August 2, 2002 at 7:30 pm featuring Terami Hirsch and Kevin Benson with Rebekah Lawstuen opening. It was fabulous. Terami is funny, kind, talented and a whole lot of fun as is her fab husband, Kevin. We had a great time with them and the show was great.
Rebekah was also wonderful. We ended up holding it outside and the weather cooperated beautifully. It was warm without being hot and slightly breezy with only a few bugs.
You can see photos here
Also, I got a very nice letter in the mail from Michael Tarlowe from Virt Records. He was sending me a CD that he wanted me to review for this site, but he also let me know that he
heard about Vienna Teng from my site, which led to her being signed by the record company!

as-yet-untitled new record, her manager (and Nettwerk Records boss)

Irish singer/songwriter Samantha Mumba is making her feature film debut.
She's been cast opposite Guy Pearce in DreamWorks Pictures' and Warner Bros.
Pictures' science-fiction adventure "The Time Machine," now before the
cameras.
Based on the classic science fiction novel by H.G. Wells, "The Time
Machine" stars Pearce ("Rules of Engagement," "L.A. Confidential") as

that time travel is possible. He tests his theories with a time machine of
his own invention that hurtles him 800,000 years into a future where he
meets Mara, played by Mumba, and discovers that mankind has divided into the
hunter -- and the hunted.
The cast also includes Jeremy Irons, Mark Addy, Philip Bosco, Phyllida Law
and Sienna Guillory.
Mumba is best known to music audiences for her hit single "Gotta Tell
You," from her debut album of the same name.

From United Press International (via Rock Music News Mailing list):
Courtney Love is counter-suing Universal Music Group (UMG) Recordings,
charging the record label violated California labor law, which allows the
termination of contracts between creative artists and entertainment
companies after seven years.
Barry Cappello, lawyer for the Hole lead singer, filed the lawsuit
Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. It comes in response to the lawsuit
UMG filed against Love when she tried to end her contract with the label.
According to the countersuit, one of the reasons Love canceled her
contract with UMG Recordings was that Universal closed Geffen Records, which
originally signed Love and her band Hole in 1992. The court documents
contend that Geffen Records provided special and unique services to its
artists and that Universal's closure of Geffen renders Love's contract void.
Love said the recording contracts artists are forced to sign in order to
get their music on the radio and videos on MTV leaves them little more than
"indentured servants." In her words: "They said that it takes 'seven albums
in seven years' to make money from an artist. As any artist will tell you, a
record company won't let you make seven albums in seven years. They force
you into touring and video cycles that make that schedule impossible. And
any artist who isn't making huge profits for the company by their second
album will be summarily dropped."
DIDO
An online Valentine's Day promotion may've helped boost sales of Dido's
album "No Angel."
SoundScan reported a 40-percent increase in sales of the CD for the week
ending Feb. 18. In addition, "No Angel" jumped from sixth place to the No.4
slot on the Billboard Top-200 Albums Chart.
The Valentine's Day promotion involved a Singleserving e-mail containing
Dido's hit song "Thank You" being sent to select MP3.com registered users. A
typical Singleserving contains a promotional song, an artist photograph, a
short biography of the artist, a "Buy It" link to online retailers, and
links to radio stations and record company Web sites, or the artist's
homepage.
MP3.com said the song was played more than 100,000 times on the day of the
promotion.

Also...
There has been a bit of controversy surrounding Jonatha Brooke's new release,
Steady Pull.
It seems, if you purchase the CD from Jonatha's Web Site
you'll pay $16.99 plus shipping and get the CD signed by Jonatha Brooke.
If you buy it from Amazon you pay $12.97 plus shipping...
But, if you physically go to a Borders Store you pay $14.99 (I believe) no shipping obviously, and you get three extra tracks.
Whatever you do, don't buy from Border's Online, that is another mess entirely...they say you get the bonus disc but you don't!
Some of Jonatha's fans are feeling a little ripped off for buying the CD directly from her and not getting the 3 tracks.
If you'd like Jonatha's explanation of the whole mess Go Here.

PATIENCE PAYS from United
"No Angel," singer-songwriter Dido's debut album, has cracked the top 10
on Billboard's Top 200 album chart -- more than a year-and-a-half after its
release. The album climbed eight spots to Number Nine, right behind Sade's
"Lovers Rock" and just ahead of Lenny Kravitz's "Greatest Hits."
Sales benefited from Eminem's sampling of a song from the album, "Thank
You," on his hit, "Stan" --and from the use of another track, "Here With
Me," as the theme song for the WB TV show "Roswell."
Dido told LAUNCH that the album title, "No Angel," may best describe the
project as a whole.
"For me," she said, "it sort of sums up the album in that, you know, it's
not perfect and I'm not perfect."
She said she's not afraid "to make mistakes and stuff ... all the songs
are somehow about, you know, some mess-up of some sort, you know, or
something that's universal or funny."
Dido sets off on a brief tour of Europe and Britain in Stockholm, Sweden,
on Jan. 27.

"No Angel," the debut album by British pop singer Dido, has been certified
platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America -- thanks to the
success of the single "Here With Me."
The CD (on the Arista label) has spent the past 26 weeks on the Billboard
Top-200 album chart, where it's currently in the top 30.
A week after "No Angel" debuted on the charts in June, one of its songs,
"Thank You," turned up as the sample on Eminem's "Stan," a track from his
"The Marshall Mathers LP." Dido was also featured in the "Stan" video.
Dido will be shooting her "Thank You" video in the weeks ahead.

Poe News from fellow music lover, Dan Stark:
"Haunted is due out October 31st, and Poe begins a US tour of Borders Books & Music beginning this Monday.
Joined by her brother, Mark Danielewski, author of House of Leaves, Poe will reportedly combine spoken
word and music, previewing the new songs and providing insight into the making of the album.
Thematically linked to House of Leaves, Haunted is not a soundtrack to the novel, but, as she and Mark explains,
"a parallax view of the same history", with the album and book offering two individual responses to the same
events and upbringing.
