"The Yellow Album" by The Temporary Thing |
a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
The Temporary Thing play intelligent, catchy pop in the vein of Belle and Sebastian, but less pastoral. Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Gleason takes charge of this band impressively.
“Out The door” is a soft, country-ish song with a clear influence from a certain Scottish band. Gleason’s gossamer voice and the gentle tempo make it a pleasure to hear.
“Wake Me Up It’s Tuesday” chime sin with tales of wanting to sleep ones life away.
It’s set to a less than sleepy backbeat.
“Lost to them” is seemingly dreamy but its words are dark and searching.
“Jean Paul Belmondo” is an up-tempo song that has all the makings of a pop hit. It’s catchy and has a smart lyric.
The Temporary Thing are hardly what their name implies, they are here to stay.

Comment: I first saw this band in Hollywood a couple of years ago. If you get the CD, and you think it's great--you will definitely fall in love after seeing them perform live. I had just the opposite experience (seeing them live and then getting a CD at the show). The live show and listening to the CD---two completely different experiences, but both equally as phenomenal. Definitely an interesting band to watch... there's very little movement on stage, but it's like they're each really into what they're doing, kind of like they're in their own little world. The music is awesome because even though you know it's original, there's a sense of familiarity---but it's completely refreshing. The live set I saw was pretty diverse. One minute it was folky and the next it was full of melody with back-up singing. Definitely some classic rock influence. I guess the one thing that I don't like about the album is that it sounds too refined(?), as if the sound isn't true to the live performance, which I remember to be a little edgier or raw(?). I hate to say it, but there are also some fine looking women in the band, so that's a plus!
