The Trouble with Success by Paula Kelley "The Trouble with Success…"
by Paula Kelley

a Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

Paula Kelley reminds me a LOT of Denmark's Marie Frank. Both the peppy music and the baby-doll voice.

The music has a slightly retro feel. It reminds me of "Mary Tyler Moore Show" or "Rhoda". I'm not sure why (some deep seated memory from childhood) or maybe the Burt Bacharach feel that some of the songs have.

There is a lot going on here. Paula not only sings, but plays harpsichord, acoustic and electric guitar, flute, organ, and piano. Then she's got a slew of musicians playing everything from upright bass to flugelhorn as well as strings. This produces a lush full sound.

"I'd Fall in Love with Anyone" is a cute song. Hell, they're all cute. But this one really has that orchestrated retro feel.

"The Girlfriend" is also good, but I think opening track "A New Time" and "My Finest Hour" are my favorites here.

The music is fun, upbeat and poppy. If you're looking for a good-mood CD you can jump around to this is a good one.
