a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
Canadian trio Pirate Jenny has made a fine record with the jazz-tinged, cabaret-infused “To the moon”.
Opener “Shame” sees vocalist Jennifer Moore uses her lovely voice over a melancholy melody.
“La Vie en Rose” is a rendition of a song by Edith Piaf, and it’s a sweet, understated version.
“Gracias a la Vida” is a Violeta Parra song. She was a Chilean singer and activist and this song is familiar to many in my country via a
version that was a hit in the eighties. In the original language it’s even more touching, this great ode to life.
“Boy” sees the band deliver a beautiful song about a rent boy. Moore sings with an understated grace.
The album ends with the familiar Brecht/Weill number “Alabama Song” in a great version.
