 "Siren Songs"
by Gretchen Lieberum

a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell

"Siren Songs" is an apt title for this album by the dulcet-voiced Gretchen Lieberum.

She starts with a stunning version of Benny Carter's "Key Largo".

Then it's a slightly trip hoppy, mostly sophisticated vibe that she gets going. The strong and jazzy moods make for appealing listening.

"You Closer" sees her crooning to a smooth beat. The late night bar vibe is well handled.

"Please make me believe in some sweet hereafter"

...she sings, imploring her beloved to come closer.

"Keep on Walking" seems like a Portishead song with less obvious angst.

"Avila" is a gorgeous song, Lieberum singing expressively.

"Siren Songs" is a class act from the packaging (simple but lovely) to the songs. It's one for the best of the year lists.

Comment: Like the album name leads you to believe, this release from Gretchen is both captivating and seductive. With new musical ideas and creative interpretations of old jazz favorites, such as the first track, "Key Largo," Gretchen reminds both old Jazz lovers and new trip-hop gurus that artists can still blossom with each album. In fact, Siren Songs introduces listeners to a sophisticated musicality unparalleled on her two previous releases. With her smooth sultry tone, Gretchen lures you in with tracks like "Avila" and "Paper Tigers," engulfing you in feeling of serenity...except with an eclectic edge. The album never loses energy or enticement; it keeps you involved the entire way through, ending with "Grace," a song that leaves you willing to give your right arm to be longer. I have changed my "favorite" song so many times already, but if I had to recommend a few BESIDES the ones I have already listed, I would say "Opus," "Beauty of Mine," "Can You Hear Me" are those kinds of melt in your mouth songs that you will never forget. Gretchen has an unequivocal ability to express complex lyrics with musical nuances with no effort. Her voice floats above the music, but maintains clarity and poise like so many vocalists lack today. Siren Songs is a truly refreshing album, reminding music lovers that truly beautiful music is still being made. Siren Songs is a must buy, and if you don't have any previous albums, Three A.M. is a must-have as well.
