a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
Flora Reed's music is warm and inviting. She favours a
Pop-flavoured folk sound that suits her songs well.
The quiet "Wake Up Laughing" has her emoting
beautifully. The sweetly evocative song is very
lovely.
The title song is gently played but carries barbed
words.
"I look simple enough, but you know the truth.
I am not quite dangerous. Still I'm a killer of sorts"
She sings like a less frantic Kristin Hersh.
"Beloved" was inspired by Toni Morrison's famous novel
of that title. It's haunting and minimal and Reed's
voice is strong on it. I'd say she does the book
justice.
"Calm what Was" is upbeat musically but
could hardly be called a happy song.
The cover of Björk's "Joga" rounds off the album
nicely. It's done a capella and gives Reed the
opportunity to let her voice shine. And shine it does.
"Settle Down" is an amazing record.
