"Season of the Hurricane" by Juliet Turner

Irish singer Juliet Turner's last album was a treat so I looked forward to hearing this.

On the surface it seems more polished, but the lovely voice and sharp songs are still here.

The recount of a one-night stand in "One Night" is poised and precise. Turner's charming accent makes it even better. "Business as Usual" is melancholy and faintly like Dido.

"Elvis is in the Building" is a surprisingly low-key song about meeting the ghost of Elvis. Turner uses lyrics that others would milk for every last drop of sensationalism and sets them to a restrained musical backing. You have to listen carefully to hear what she's singing so it's good she included the lyrics.

The sexual adventures described in the sprightly "1987" are there as a natural part of the song and not for shock value.

"Everything beautiful is Burning" is a catchy potential hit. The words speak of hope in the face of adversity.

Turner covers Lee Hazelwood's "Sugartown" and makes it her own.
