a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
Marissa Nadler's follow-up to her brilliant debut is wonderful. The
stripped-down folk sound and her soft voice makes it work.
"The Little
Famous Song" has the air of a recently uncovered standard, but Nadler wrote
it herself.
"Mr John Lee (Velveteen Rose)" sees her singing of a faithless
and murderous man in an old folk style. The melody is stunning.
"Yellow
Lights" is haunting and sees Nadler's sigh of a vocal being very affecting.
"Old Love Haunts me in the Morning" with its use of piano and disturbing
lyrics is lovely.
It's another stupendous record from the gifted Nadler.
