a Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds
This CD is pretty raw, I mean, raw. It's just Ellen, and guitar on most tracks with some songs featuring sax and flute. The vocals are the focal point here...and they're good vocals. She has a very jazzy, scatting voice. The guitar compliments her nicely.
"You Don't Know What Love Is" made me feel like I was sitting in a small nearly empty club smoking, drinking and taking in the music. Almost like a backdrop to a scene in a movie where we pan over to the woman singing on stage just to show where the main characters are...setting the mood.
This CD is actually quite good at setting a mood.
"Mourning" really shows her range and showcases her voice very well. She's all over the place on this one.
If you're tired of regular pop/folk/rock and want to try something different to set the mood for a dinner party or something, this is a good choice.
