 "One at Twilight"
by Saint Joan

a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell

Saint Joan is a group from England fronted by the gifted Ellen McGee. Their debut mini-album is lush and somber with shades of PJ Harvey and the Cowboy Junkies. Opener "Klaus Kinski" is named after the odd German actor who played Nosferatu in Werner Herzogs version of the silent movie classic. McGee sings of playing chess with death, which is straight out of "The Seventh Seal" too.

"Nightmare in E Minor" is as despondent as the most gorgeously downbeat songs by Low. "Electric Light, Shine On" allows McGee's voice and Krisztina Hidasi's violin space. It resembles the Walkabouts "Devil's Road" album and few things could be more glorious. "For Star City" closes the album with poise and tragedy.

This is a splendid debut and Saint Joan should move on to a bright future.
