Midnight Flower
by Katharine Blake

a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell

Katharine Blake has a long career being a member of Miranda Sex Garden and the still existing Mediaeval Baebes.

Her first solo record sees her take traditional text and set them to music. Her bewitching vocals are the focal point of the title song, eerie choirs echoing her words.

Maiden of the Mountains Deep is sweetly haunting as Blake sings her sad tale.

Cold Blows the Wind is eerie and peculiarly lovely as many of Blake’s past works are. The male vocal suits the song well; Nick Marsh has a timbre that fits with Blake’s sweetly sad crooning.

Her path from accappella madrigals to darkwave industrial music with a side order of medieval songs must be unique.

This new chapter in her boom leads intriguingly sideways with both old texts and more modern sounds.

What is consistent is only her excellence and determination.
