Life as Mary - Allison Jarrell "Life as Mary"
by Allison Jarrell

a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell

Allison Jarrell's new album is an engaging listen. The piano playing singer is joined by a full band which leads to a dynamic sound on her well crafted songs.

"Lovers, Haters and Friends" is a very nice song that showcases Jarrell's expert piano playing and her honey-sweet vocals. Anthony Gravely duets with her and sounds somewhat like Elvis Costello, which gives the song that extra edge.

The lovely "Cry No More" is an uplifting song of hope with Jarrell sounding like Chrissie Hynde. The song drifts into gospel territory with its repeated "Sing Allelujah" chorus.

"Stephen's Song" is muted and haunting. Jarrell's harmonies are pure heaven here.

"Johnny" is a rockin' song which is played with plenty of abandon by Jarrell and her band. Her excited yelps at the end of the song are great.

Ten perfect songs, a versatile voice and a tight band, what more do you need?
