a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
I've reviewed two previous albums by Jo Gabriel. This new record combines
songs old and new and is her first for a new label.
The singer/pianist continues her intriguing journey. She evokes others who have played the
piano, but adds her own flavor to the mix.
The album starts with the
delicate "Objects in the Mirror", a cello stands out among the instruments.
The title track is lovely and sees Gabriel's piano playing at its finest.
"Tinderbox" is still disturbingly beautiful, Gabriel sings "Living in my
tinderbox" a line worthy of Tori Amos.
"I'm Okay" is a hushed and strong
song. Gabriel's hesitant vocal adds to the tension.
"Broken" brings the
album to a satisfying conclusion.
"Island" is a record I hope will bring
Gabriel many new fans.
