Girl Versions by Emm Gryner "Girl Versions"
by Emm Gryner

a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell

Canadian singer Emm Gryner had the same idea with Girl Versions as Tori Amos had with Strange Little Girls; to cover songs by male artists. Gryner thought of it before Tori and made a limited edition tape a few years ago. This is the album version.

Emm Gryner takes some unlikely candidates and makes them her own. Thus Def Leppard's hip thrusting "Pour Some Sugar on Me" becomes a sensitive love song. Clash's "Straight to hell" is more moving than the original and a Stone Temple Pilots song becomes listenable.

Gryner has successfully remade these songs in her own image. The album is one of the year's best.

Comment: Emm Gryner's 'Girl Versions' is like a dream. It's utterly fantastic and I've never heard a more brilliantly, beautiful song than 'For What Reason'. Excellent.
