Deeper Waters by Laura Vecchione

My first impression of this record was that is was too bluesy for me. I listened to it twice but it didn't click. Then, as I normally do, I spun it one more time to make sure. For some reason, today, it clicked. Yes, it's still bluesy at times, but there's so much more here.

Firstly, Veccione's voice is stupendous (I haven't used that word in years, don't ask me why it leapt into my mind just now). It carries so much emotion. You feel every note, every word. " When the Fire's Gone" is downright weep-worthy.

These songs are, I guess, strong is the best word. Strong in melody, strong in voice, and the musicians are great. Solid production and a first class project all around.

She does a piano heavy great version of The Beatles' "Lady Madonna". Quite rockin.

Here's a secret, I'm even loving the bluesy stuff. I used to say that Bonnie Raitt is the only person that can sing blues and I'll still like it (she's a goddess). I guess I have to add Laura Veccione to that very short list.
