Ballade of Ned Haywood - Mimi Burns "Ballade of Ned Haywood"

by Mimi Burns

a Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

Mimi Burns claims this album came about because of a trip to England where she met an old ship's captain who wanted her to run away with him. She declined but the last song on this CD pays a little tribute to the man she didn't choose.

The opening song with the quickly paced lyrics and sassy style prepares us for what is to come on the rest of the CD. It's got wailing guitars, a strong beat and gusty vocals.

All the songs are solid with strong guitar lines and interesting lyrics. But they cover a lot of genres. Some have a bluesy feel to them, and some are almost pub tunes. By the end of "Sunday Morning" you'll feel like you're in a beer hall where everyone is singing along. Some are slightly Celtic such as "Land of the Living" which has gorgeous orchestration and vocals that would make Loreena McKennit fans proud.

This CD shows quite a wide range in vocals, songwriting, genre as well as musicianship. Everyone is bound to find something they really dig on this CD.
