 "Anything But Ordinary"
by Deb Ferrara

a Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

New Jersey's Deb Ferrara has released a fine rock/pop CD. The music is catchy and interesting if a bit predictable at times. Her voice is a nice match for the genre which can also stray into the bluesy area (as on "I Don't Like it").

"Loving You" has a melody that reminds me of another song, but I can't place it.

I personally don't find anything outstanding or unique about this CD (which is kind of ironic, given the title). Maybe I'm just tired. But I also can't find anything wrong with it. It's a good solid light rock music recording that I'm sure many will enjoy.

Stand out songs: "Walk Away" and "It's Me"

Comment: Unfortunately for Deb Ferrara, she's singularly devoid of charisma -- she writes strong melodies, and she has no problem carrying a tune, but she sounds blandly forgettable while she's doing so. Even the album's best song, "It's Me", sounds like something Carole King would've written thirty years ago. This comparison is particularly apt for Ferrara, as artists like King (pre-Tapestry) and Linda Perry seem like good models for her to follow. It just so happens that, in addition to creating mediocre albums like Anything But Ordinary, Ferrara is also (take a deep breath) a member of ASCAP, Vice-President of Women In Music, a songwriter-for-hire, a producer, an organizer of annual concerts in support of breast cancer research and the owner of a music publishing company, among many other things. As her web site informs us, each of these sidelines has enabled Ferrara to make some fairly high-level contacts in the business. Therefore, while you'll probably never hear anything more about Anything But Ordinary, get used to hearing the name Deb Ferrara -- chances are, it's going to become a lot better known.
