a Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
Maybe you remember Propaganda, a German group who has some success in the eighties. Their mesmeric hit "Dr Mabuse" was a fabulous pop moment.
Claudia Brucken sang with them and then recorded a solo record, but since then we haven't heard much from her.
This album of covers is an odd way to make a comeback, but it works just fine.
Brucken's diva-ish crooning and Poppy's piano playing ensures we get an inspired set of songs. Bowie's "Drive in Saturday" is a hard song to cover, but the duo pull it off.
Kate Bush's peerless "Running up That hill" has been covered many times, but few readings have matched the originals soaring mood. This version is downcast, but Brucken's accented voice is special enough to pull it off.
"Libertango" by Astor Piazzolla might be familiar in Grace Jones' version, this is less strident.
Mc Almont and Butler's "You Do" is a great-lost pop song that is lovingly unearthed.
In all it's good to have Brucken back and I hope she stays longer this time around.
